Emily Courtauld

The gallery at artichaut shows a variety of work by a selection of artists and craftspeople initially from the UK, but as we become more established and knowledgeable about local talent, we will endeavour to showcase regional work as well. What links the work is a high standard of craftsmanship that is often paired with a whimsical sense of humour.

Here are two of the artists to be featured in the gallery...
Emily Stracey
Strongly influenced by her imagination, Emily tells strange and humorous stories, through mixed media sculptures often accompanied by words, captions or labels. Inspired by general happenings in everyday life and the unusual characteristics of human behaviour, bizarre tales are woven around individual animal characters. These ridiculous anecdotes are brought to life through the use of the rough black and white finish of Raku fired ceramics juxtaposed with lively, colourful textiles and enhanced by words which elaborate on the narrative behind each sculpture. All of Emilys ceramics are hand built so each piece is individual in character and personality.
Kath Love
Kath makes textile pictures, using recycled fabrics and a combination of patchwork, applique and hand embroidery. She works surrounded by fabric, which she uses like a paint palette with different colours, textures and patterns. Kath loves using old cotton shirts and dresses aswell as old table linen and she explores the idea of giving them a new life in a piece of art work.
